Around the World in 80 Drinks

One of the best ways to see a new city is through its food and dining scene. That said, these bars around the globe are on my bucket list.

  1. Wrecking Bar Brewpub

    Wrecking Bar Brewpub

    Atlanta, Georgia

This new space in my favorite Atlanta neighborhood, Little Five Points, specializes in the best of both worlds: house-brewed ales and inventive cocktails, like the Drawn + Quartered, a jalapeño-infused vodka mule.

  2. Dead Ringer

    Dead Ringer

    Sydney, Australia

I'd go drinking down under at this super-chic cocktail bar in Sydney's up-and-coming Surrey Hill neighborhood.

  3. The Broken Shaker

    The Broken Shaker

    Miami Beach, Florida

In the midst of Miami's hip nightclubs and bars, this casual, bohemian escape is right up my alley.

  4. The Connaught Bar

    The Connaught Bar

    London, United Kingdom

There's a martini cart, so you can decide on shaken or stirred right at your seat.

  5. Nightjar

    London, United Kingdom

A basement speakeasy inspired by 1920s glamour, plus live jazz and blues.

  6. 21st Amendment Brewery & Restaurant

    21st Amendment Brewery & Re...

    San Francisco, California

Take me to the homeland of my absolute favorite beer, Hell or High Watermelon, where it's on draught (in spring and summer) and glasses are garnished with a slice of its eponymous fruit.

  7. Bar Marmont

    Bar Marmont

    Los Angeles, California

On my list for the sole purpose of shameless celebrity-watching; this hard-to-get-into spot is an enclave for the A-list.

  8. Husk

    Charleston, South Carolina

I've heard nothing but great things about this Southern restaurant; the attached bar is home to an impressive selection of rare bourbon.

  9. Longman & Eagle

    Longman & Eagle

    Chicago, Illinois

In the heart of Logan Square, Longman & Eagle is all about whiskey and delicious food. The restaurant's mantra: Eat, Sleep, Whiskey.

  10. Clyde Common

    Clyde Common

    Portland, Oregon

This restaurant/cocktail bar in Portland's Ace Hotel stocks an impressive whiskey collection, plus sweet bar snacks like popcorn with togarashi honey and butter.

  11. Container Bar

    Container Bar

    Austin, Texas

Seven stacked cube-like structures make up the country's first bar inside of a shipping container, located in the middle of buzzing downtown Austin. It'd be fun to sip a Paloma while getting lost in this industrial-style space.

  12. Candelaria

    Paris, France

Clearly marked bars are so yesterday; it's all about the speakeasy now. Candelaria is a super-hip cocktail bar hidden behind a taco joint in Paris' third arrondissement.

  13. Le Select

    Le Select

    Paris, France

For a lit nerd like me, following in Hemingway's footsteps is a perfect way to drink in Paris. The author was a fan of this classic brasserie in the Montparnasse neighborhood, furnished with Art Deco mirrors and classic red banquettes.

  14. Carousel Bar

    Carousel Bar

    New Orleans, Louisiana

A circular bar that spins like a merry-go-round is either the coolest place ever, or a very easy way to get motion sickness while sipping a Sazerac.
